The Key to Creative Success
Scorpion Style Collaboration
The creation of mood boards has proven to be a massive improvement to the creative process for the Healthcare Design Team at Scorpion. The ability to discuss visual language and client preferences with helpful examples starts the project in a fun place where everyone can come together. We’ve found that clients and teammates alike find these exercises as some of the most beneficial and enjoyable throughout the project’s lifecycle.
The act of crafting bespoke boards for each and every client; however, adds length to the projects timeline and budget. Instead of modifying the process to account for this extra, expensive step we decided instead to create a new utility that can be plugged into every project to gain every bit of the benefits without needing to add cost or time.
My team created nine archetypal mood boards in order to cover all the preferences frequently seen in the industry. We ranked each one on a quadrant scale comparing the subject, the setting, the activity level, and the benefits seen in the photogrographs.
We then developed a lean interface that fits well into our proprietary CMS and allows for clients and creatives to come together. By answering preference questions, we plot our clients on the same quadrant ranking. This then allows us to sort the moodboards by relevance and also gives us what we like to call a ‘messaging profile’ which serves as our success metric throughout the design of the project.
Once a client has selected a moodboard, we then dive into photo selection and discuss which examples best and worst represent their organization. Our designers leave this exercise very well equipped and ready to execute at an extremely high level. Since implementing this utility, we’ve seen a drastic increase in first round approvals due to both improved client relationships and improved clarity of preferences.
